HR Society Meeting Minutes: 1/27/10

Guest Speaker: Wendy Hendersen from the Management Group.

Wendy is the 2010 President for SWHRMA

Discussion about Internships in her company:

-Has had an internship program in her company for the last 3 years

-All of the interns have found employment in hr after it is completed

-Doing a little bit of everything throughout the HR processes. Interns learn how to do the job and have a good learning experience.

-Wendy's interns have exposure to everything either through hands on experience or exposure to it.

-It is best to spend 4 hours per day and consecutive days working during your internship.

-She currently has an internship available now and is open immediately.

-She started the program because she likes to work in a team environment and wanted to have someone to work with and have the team work and do things together.

Typical day of an internship:

-Involves a lot of mentoring, good communication, and learning

-Recruiting, phone screens/pre-employment testing, observe interviews and then you actually help with them, learn about pre-employment procedures and how to do a good reference checks.

-Meet for the first 15 minutes of the day and talk about what needs to be done and what can be scrapped.

-Throughout the day able to touch base with each other.

-Learning how to make craigs list postings, html, etc

-Paces it to see how well you learn, you don’t get it all thrown on you at one time.

-Will tell you where you should focus when you are in the employment process.

-If you don’t have a good reputation in HR the word will get around.

-Start with a tiny bit of filing then with recruiting.

HOLDING AN INTERNSHIP WITH SCHOOL, FAMILY, ETC

-Have to manage your time want to make sure that it is a consecutive 20 hours , 2 or 3 days in a row and at least 4 hours per day. Pretty flexible with the hours per week.

-Get a chance to see and interview
